- About Ateneum
The abundance of landscape paintings in the Presidential Palace collections can be explained by the emerging independence and increasing popularity of the genre in the 19th century. This growing appreciation of landscapes was also influenced by the new, nationally and romantically oriented thinking of the time, which favoured picturesque and distinctive landscape motifs that typified the homeland and its people. One aspect of this pictorial tradition was also an interest in exploring the topography of the provinces and the distinctive features of their history and inhabitants. The geographic location of Finland is reflected in the relatively large number of pictures with winter themes.
