Victoria Åberg: Monrepos, 1865

Victoria Åberg was a woman artist whose works were purchased for the Imperial Collection as early as the 1860s, together with a painting by Alexandra Frosterus-Såltin. Åberg had studied art in Düsseldorf and Weimar. In Germany she adopted the Romantic approach to landscape, epitomized by this view of the famous Monrepos park in Vyborg. The work exaggerates the shapes and proportions of the park’s natural features, foregrounding the little castle-like chapelof Ludwigstein.
