The artist families had lot of history in common already before moving to Tuusula, besides being united by strong family ties. Aino Sibelius was the sister of Eero Järnefelt, and visits widened the family circle – Jean Sibelius’s brother Christian and his wife, Saimi Järnefelt’s sister Nelma, were frequent guests.

Formal family dinners and “duty visits” were unknown in the artist colony: people visited each other when they felt like it. Annual holidays were usually spent together. On Shrove Tuesday they all rode a sleigh and ate Shrove buns, and at Midsummer there was a collective bonfire. Shared summer pastimes included boat trips to the majestic rocky outcrops at Sarvikallio. The greatest holiday of the year, Christmas, was mostly celebrated among the family.
