Sail and steam

Several paintings of sailing vessels and steamships were purchased for the Imperial Art Collection. Many of them were painted by Albert Edelfelt and depicted vessels from abroad that had arrived in Porvoo, moored in or anchored outside of Haikko. In the late 19th century, Porvoo was an important foreign trade port that could have several dozen cargo vessels anchored in the roadstead. Brisk and functional maritime transport from Finland to Europe and the rest of the world was important also from the Russian perspective, because it guaranteed the mother country’s access to the Atlantic and the West.
