Oscar Kleineh: Street in Quimper, Brittany, Nocturnal View, 1874
Oscar Kleineh, who favoured sea views and cityscapes, spent long periods abroad. This nocturnal street view painted in Brittany, France, was one of two versions that he produced of the same scene in the course of a single year. The other, depicting its busy daytime life, is alsoin the Ateneum collection. In this night-time version, the shadows cast by the moon on the walls of the buildings are cleverly portrayed as almost identical to those created by the sun in the daytime version.
