- About Ateneum
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Finnish artist Helene Schjerfbeck. The anniversary will be celebrated throughout Finland with special exhibitions and events.
The anniversary year exhibitions begin at Villa Gyllenberg with "About Spirituality in Art", which opens on 29 February. In April a permanent exhibition presenting the life and art of Helene Schjerfbeck will open at the Ekenäs Museum Centre EKTA. The theme of the exhibition at the Ostrobothnian Museum in Vaasa will be Schjerfbeck and the works of her contemporary female artists. Ateneum Art Museum will present almost three hundred works of art by Schjerfbeck in a major exhibition that opens on 1 June. The Friends of Ateneum Association has donated five of Schjerfbeck's sketchbooks that will be on public display for the first time ever.
The anniversary year will also be marked this spring by public lectures at the Kirpilä Art Home. In addition, the Serlachius Museums in Mänttä and the Summer University of Tampere will organise a visual arts camp in June under the theme "In the Footsteps of Helene Schjerfbeck".
The summer exhibition of the Helsinki Artists' Association will be inspired by Helene Schjerfbeck. The exhibition "Studies in Change" will open in June. The Finnish Watercolour Society in turn invites members of the public to its "Great Painting Event" to capture the views of Helsinki in watercolours on 10 July, the birthday of Helene Schjerfbeck and Finnish Fine Arts Day. In honour of the anniversary year, a collection of stamps featuring four of Schjerfbeck's paintings has also been released.
