- About Ateneum
From the start, only high-quality paintings by the most prestigious Finnish artists of the age were acquired for the Imperial Art Collection. The subjects of the pictures were not always Finnish, however, as it was usual in the latter half of the 19th century for artists to study and work abroad for extensive periods of time. In addition to landscapes, the paintings in the Presidential Palace also include urban views, particularly from France. Most of them represent the most recent acquisitions in the palace, dating back to the early decades of the 20th century, although there is also a nocturnal scene from Brittany from as early as 1874 by Oscar Kleineh, a painter with a predilection for both marine and urban subjects.
