Järnefelt was fascinated by seasonal and climatic cloud formations. His interest was sparked initially by the paintings of his uncle and teacher Mihail Clodt, in which cloudy skies create the atmosphere for the entire painting. Järnefelt made numerous cloud studies using oil paints and gouache. Clouds also play an important role in setting the mood for his landscape paintings, in which he characteristically leaves a lot of space for cloud formations and the light that emanates from behind them. Järnefelt’s cloud paintings can be considered landscapes of the artist’s mind.
